CUFI in the News

deniis pragerPastor Hagee on Dennis Prager's Radio Program on October 15, 2007

Dennis Prager spoke to six thousand people at Cornerstone Church in San Antonio on October 14, 2007. The church gave $8 million to Israeli charities. Dennis talks to Pastor Hagee about the event and why evangelical Christians are so supportive of the Jewish state.

Evangelicals raise $8.5 million for Jewish state - Excerpts of the article that appeared in The Jerusalem Post on October 17, 2007

The curtain rose to a hundred performers singing "Hinei Ma Tov" as the audience swayed back and forth and clapping their hands. They remained standing through "Hatikva," declarations of support for Israel, and a duet of "Jerusalem of Gold."  And when the evening closed - on a prayer for the State of Israel - 6,000 people, all but a few of them evangelical Christians, streamed out of the Cornerstone Church in San Antonio, Texas.

On Sunday night, Pastor John Hagee, head of the Cornerstone Church and a founding member of Christians United for Israel, hosted his 26th annual "Night to Honor Israel." It was a massive multimedia extravaganza of music, skits, speeches and dance, broadcast live throughout the world and attended by Israeli representatives and community leaders from the Jewish Federation of Houston. PASTOR HAGEE'S SCRIPTURE OF THE  WEEK
PSALM 121

Pastor Hagee

As the November Annapolis Summit approaches, I ask that you join the leadership of CUFI in praying Psalm 121 for the protection of Jerusalem.

”I will lift up my eyes to the hills—
    From whence comes my help?
My help comes from the LORD,
                                                               Who made heaven and earth.

He will not allow your foot to be moved;
He who keeps you will not slumber.
Behold, He who keeps Israel
    Shall neither slumber nor sleep.
The LORD is your keeper;

The LORD is your shade at your right hand.
The sun shall not strike you by day,
   Nor the moon by night.

The LORD shall preserve you from all evil;
    He shall preserve your soul.
The LORD shall preserve your going out and your coming in from this time forth, and even forevermore.”

CUFI EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR DAVID BROG'S
WEEKLY MESSAGE:
ANNAPOLIS APPROACHES

brog_jpg

The Bush Administration is steadily moving forward with its plans to hold a Mideast summit in Annapolis, Maryland in late November.  Leaders from Israel, the Palestinian Authority and the neighboring Arab nations are expected to attend.  The Administration has decided that now is the time to make an energetic push for peace in the Middle East.  While I certainly appreciate the Administration’s goal of peace, it is difficult to see how this upcoming summit will bring this elusive goal any closer.

In order for any such peace overture to work, Israel needs a real partner for peace.  To qualify as such, this partner must embrace two central principles.  First, they must accept Israel’s right to exist and renounce terrorism against Israel.  Second, they must be willing and able to prevent terror against Israel by third parties from the territories that Israel transfers to their control.  The widespread skepticism of Annapolis stems from the simple fact that Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas satisfies neither of these two prerequisites.

Has Abbas renounced terror against Israel?  Well, he has made a number of statements to that effect.  So has his impressive new Prime Minister, Salam Fayyad.  Such statements are certainly welcome steps in the right direction.  But Fayyad is a technocrat with no independent power base.  And Abbas is the leader of a movement Fatah -- whose behavior is sadly at odds with Abbas’ words.

To this day Fatah continues to embrace and practice terror against Israel.  In case we needed a reminder of this reality, today’s newspapers supplied one.  It has now been disclosed that Israeli intelligence foiled a plot to assassinate Israeli Prime Minister Olmert this past June.  Every single one of the plotters was a Fatah member in good standing.  To continue reading David Brog's Message click here.

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR'S NIGHTS TO HONOR ISRAEL REPORTS

East Haven, Connecticut- October 21, 2007
Last Night, I had the honor of speaking at a Night to Honor Israel in East Haven, Connecticut.  The other keynote speakers were Roz Rothstein of the pro-Israel advocacy group Stand With Us and CUFI Regional Director Robert Stearns.  Roz informed us about the latest threats to Israel and how to respond, and Robert inspired us with his compelling explanation of why Christians must stand with Israel.

Over $24,000 was raised.  Half of this total was donated to the Loving-kindness fund of Ohr Torah Stone, which supports humanitarian needs in Israel.  The other half was given to the New Haven Jewish Federation to be used to support social services in Israel.

This was the first Night to Honor Israel in Connecticut, and it was a breakthrough.  Over 1,600 people packed the hall, leaving only standing room for the later arrivals.  As is so often the case, many of our Jewish guests entered suspicious and wary.  But almost all gathered around the kosher dessert that followed the event deeply moved and excited to know they have so many new friends.

Congratulations to CUFI State Director Pastor Brian Simmons and his wife Pastor Candice Simmons.  Holding a Night to Honor Israel is a difficult undertaking.  But the Simmons made it look effortless.

Davenport, Iowa- October 18, 2007
On Thursday night, I had the pleasure of addressing the Night to Honor Israel in Davenport, Iowa.  This was the fourth annual event held in the Quad Cities of Iowa and Illinois.  It was a wonderful night.  After three prior events, the Jewish community has become full partners in the Night to Honor Israel, and they enthusiastically embraced the speeches, singing and dancing that filled the hall.  Over 1,200 people came out to the beautiful Adler Theater in downtown Davenport, and they donated over $34,000 to the Jewish Federation of the Quad Cities to be used to support Jewish immigration to Israel.

Congratulations to CUFI state director Tom McGovern for his early embrace of the Night to Honor Israel and his continued hard work and excellence.  Tom has made the Quad cities an example of Christian-Jewish collaboration for us all to follow.

SIGN A LETTER OF ENCOURAGEMENT TO THE PEOPLE OF ISRAEL

We are proud that during the last two weeks thousands of CUFI members have signed the Letter of Encouragement to the People of Israel.

If you have already signed the letter, thank you for standing with the People of Israel.  Now we want to give you the opportunity to do even more to help Israel.   Please click here and ask your friends friends and family to sign the letter.

If you have not yet signed the letter, please do so by clicking here. We will deliver this letter, with your signature, to the White House and the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office.  In addition, we will present the signed letter to Israel’s Ambassador to the United States, Sallai Meridor, when he speaks at Cornerstone Church in San Antonio Texas on November 25..

The United States is hard at work organizing a major Middle East peace summit to take place in Maryland in late November.  To ensure the success of this summit, the State Department is already trying to hammer out the general outlines of a peace agreement between Israel and the Palestinians.  As part of this process, many observers fear that Israel will come under increasing pressure to agree to significant territorial concessions.

The leadership of Christians United for Israel has decided that it's urgent that Israel's leaders and citizens know that CUFI will stand with them if they choose to resist any such pressure.  The Israeli withdrawals from Southern Lebanon and Gaza have proven to be great victories for Israel's enemies in Hezbollah and Hamas.  The Israelis must know that if they decide that now is not the time to repeat this experience in the West Bank, then millions of American Christians will support this decision.

Now, more than ever, Israelis must know that they are not alone.
To ensure that the Israeli people hear this message loud and clear, Christians United for Israel is going to purchase a full-page advertisement in Israel’s most widely circulated paper, Yedioth Ahronoth.  We will use this space to publish a letter of solidarity with the Israeli people in Hebrew so that every Israeli can read it and understand it.

Click here to view an English version of the letter and to sign your name.

In addition, if you would like to help pay the cost of a full page ad in Israel's most widely-read newspaper, please click here.  Your support will help make this gesture of solidarity possible.

ISRAEL AND MIDDLE EAST NEWS

vice president cheneyCheney: U.S., Other Nations Won't Let Iran Get Nuclear Arms
The United States and other nations will not allow Iran to obtain a nuclear weapon, Vice President Cheney said yesterday. "Our country, and the entire international community, cannot stand by as a terror-supporting state fulfills its grandest ambitions," Cheney said. He said that Tehran's efforts to pursue technology that would allow it to build a nuclear weapon are obvious, and that "the regime continues to practice delay and deceit in an obvious effort to buy time." If Iran continues on its course, Cheney said, the United States and other nations are "prepared to impose serious consequences." "We will not allow Iran to have a nuclear weapon," he said. Iran to fire '11,000 rockets in minute' if attacked
Iran warned on Saturday it would fire off 11,000 rockets at enemy bases within the space of a minute if the United States launched military action against the Islamic republic. "In the first minute of an invasion by the enemy, 11,000 rockets and cannons would be fired at enemy bases," said a brigadier general in the elite Revolutionary Guards, Mahmoud Chaharbaghi. He said that the Guards' weapons were spread out throughout the country and so would not be affected by any isolated US strikes against military facilities. The Guards are Iran's elite ideological army and responsible for its most significant weapons such as the longer range Shahab-3 missile which has Israel and US bases in the Middle East within its range. Air Attack Targeted Nascent Nuclear Facility Built With North Korean 'Expertise'
Israeli officials believed that a target their forces bombed inside Syria last month was a nuclear facility, because they had detailed photographs taken by a possible spy inside the complex, ABC News has learned. A senior U.S. official told ABC News the Israelis first discovered a suspected Syrian nuclear facility early in the summer, and the Mossad, Israel's intelligence agency, managed to either co-opt one of the facility's workers or to insert a spy posing as an employee. As a result, the Israelis obtained many detailed pictures of the facility from the ground.  The official said the facility was a North Korean design in its construction, the technology present and the ability to put it all together. It was North Korean "expertise," said the official, meaning the Syrians must have had "human" help from North Korea. Iran replaces top nuclear negotiator with Mahmoud's ally
Iran's top nuclear negotiator has stepped down, a move expected to worsen the country's dispute with the West over its atomic program, officials said Saturday. The sudden resignation of Ali Larijani could harden President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's already rigid stance in ongoing nuclear negotiations, since Larijani was viewed as a more diplomatic figure. Larijani's replacement, senior foreign ministry official Saeed Jalili, is Ahmadinejad's ally and expected to support his hard-line position in the nukes standoff. Olmert escapes terror attack in Jericho
A group of gunmen affiliated with Fatah attempted to hit Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's convoy as it made its way from Jerusalem to Jericho for a meeting with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on August 6.  Following the incident, the Palestinians arrested three suspects, who were later released. Two other cell members are being held in Israel. Israeli security sources expressed their anger over the release, which took place "after these terrorists' involvement in the foiled attack was made clear."  (Ali Waked, Amnon Meranda, Attila Somfalvi, Efrat Weiss and Neta Sela, YNet News, October 21, 2007) To read the entire article click here.

Israeli archaeologists overseeing a contested dig at Jerusalem's holiest site for Muslims and Jews stumbled upon a sealed archaeological level dating back to the era of the first biblical Jewish temple, the Israel Antiquities Authority said Sunday. On Sunday, the Israel Antiquities Authority announced that it had discovered fragments of ceramic table wares and animal bones dating back to the first Jewish temple - from the 6th to the 10th centuries B.C. Jon Seligman, Jerusalem regional archaeologist for the Antiquities Authority, said the find was significant since it could help scholars in reconstructing the dimensions and boundaries of the Temple Mount during the first temple period. The Israel Pledge

We believe that the Jewish people have a right to live in their ancient land of Israel, and that the modern State of Israel is the fulfillment of this historic right.

We maintain that there is no excuse for acts of terrorism against Israel and that Israel has the same right as every other nation to defend her citizens from such violent attacks.

We pledge to stand with our brothers and sisters in Israel and to speak out on their behalf whenever and wherever necessary until the attacks stop and they are finally living in peace and security with their neighbors.
