Arson balloons, rockets have been launched into Israel for over a week of escalation along Gaza border
Israel Defense Force (IDF) tanks struck Hamas targets along the border with the Gaza Strip early Thursday morning, as part of a nightly response to incendiary balloons that have scorched acres of land in Israel.
“Terrorists launched explosive balloons from Gaza into Israel throughout the day, causing fires on land across southern Israel,” the IDF said in a statement. “In response, our tanks just targeted Hamas military posts in Gaza.”
Palestinian Shehab news agency reported shelling in four areas.
Incendiary balloon bombs have been floating into Israeli territory from Gaza for over a week, with Israel repeatedly stating it places the responsibility solely on Hamas, which controls the Strip. Leaders in the coastal enclave are reportedly vying to pressure Israel to release aid from Qatar.
Early Wednesday, the Israeli Air Force struck targets in Gaza responding to a rocket shot at Ashdod late Tuesday.
Defense Minister and Alternate Prime Minister Benny Gantz met with leaders of Israeli communities surrounding Gaza later in the day. He told them he has no interest in Gaza besides keeping it quiet.
