US to unveil more sanctions against Tehran on Monday

Iran could gather enough fissile material for a nuclear weapon by the end of the year, an unnamed senior US official told Reuters on Sunday.

“Iran is clearly doing everything it can to keep in existence a virtual turnkey capability to get back into the weaponization business at a moment’s notice should it choose to do so,” the report quoted the official as saying.

The administration of US President Donald Trump has repeatedly accused Tehran of seeking nuclear weapons, echoing staunch Iran critic Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

“Because of Iran’s provocative nuclear escalation, it could have sufficient fissile material for a nuclear weapon by the end of this year,” the official told Reuters

The report comes a day after Washington unilaterally proclaimed that UN sanctions against Iran are back in force and promised to punish those who violate them.
